Youth Nature based programs will provide opportunities to discover the outdoors, have hands-on learning experiences, and explore natural history.

Home School Nature Program

The group meets the first Tuesday of each month from September-April with a fun day scheduled for the first Tuesday in May. Open to all ages. No registration required, just show up on the scheduled day and time.

TIME: 10:00AM or 1:30PM

  • Sept: Monarch Tagging, insects & migration, why do we tag monarchs?
  • Oct: Pioneer and Native Games (hike out to Pioneer cemetery and do grave rubbings?)
  • Nov: Fibonacci Study - observe items from nature that use the Fibonacci sequence, Fibonacci art --> circles of diff sizes, prints of spiral things, mandala coloring...
  • Dec: Snow - snowflake formation, baking soda "snow"?, ice experiments...
  • Jan: Phenology - study of timing of events in nature, e.g. when migratory birds come back each year
  • Feb: Snowshoeing (weather permitting), otherwise winter animals/hibernation with Valentine's craft
  • Mar: Nature Journaling - decorate journals, show how to set up, give ideas for entries, kids can use at home
  • Apr: Water Quality - physical, chemical, and biological tests; pH activity; test Little Sioux
  • May: Fun Day @ Mill Creek Park
