Barred Owls are carnivores feeding on a variety of mammals including mice, voles, squirrels, and chipmunks. They will also eat reptiles, amphibians, birds and insects.

There are two commonly heard hoot calls made by barred owls. The first one sounds like “who cooks for you, who cooks for you all”, the second one sounds like monkeys. Click the link to hear their calls.

Barred owls are crepuscular, this means they are mainly active at dawn and dusk. During the day they are difficult to see, due to them preferring to roost on branches or tree cavities. Nesting for these owls, abandoned nests are typically used for their young. The nests are aggressively protected from predators. Nests are preyed on by large owls, hawks, raccoons, and great horned owls that will eat both the young and the adults.
