There are nine bats in Iowa they are; little brown, big brown, northern long eared, Indiana, silver haired, tricolored, evening, red, and hoary bats.

All the bats found in Iowa are insectivores, they have an important role to play, controlling the insect population.

The Indiana and the Northern long eared bats are endangered due to the West Nile Virus.

Bats typically are found in forested areas near water, although others are found in cities picking off insects from street lights. During the winter when food is scarce they find a place to hibernate, places include buildings, caves or mine shafts.
